Monessen police mounted a brief search for an 8-year-old boy who reportedly got off a school bus at the wrong stop Thursday afternoon.

The search ended when the boy's mother called police to let them know he had made his way to the home of a family friend.

Police were notified at 4:40 p.m. that the boy had failed to get off at a stop on Summit Avenue.

A secretary at Monessen Elementary Center said the district worked with the bus garage and the boy's teacher to figure out which bus he boarded yesterday.

She said the boy had not been riding his usual bus because his parents had requested that he be dropped off at a different location.

"We're thinking that he got confused," she said. "That's why we don't like to do bus changes."
