Man accused of hitting child with leather belt

A Monroeville man is accused of hitting a 3-year-old with a leather belt to discipline the child.

Irwin police charged Marvin Jackson Stewart, 22, of Monroeville Boulevard with aggravated assault, simple assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He remained in Westmoreland County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bond on Tuesday.

Police charged Stewart on Sunday, writing in a criminal complaint that the child suffered bruises on her upper legs, lower back and buttocks. The child was taken by ambulance to Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville, then transferred to Children's Hospital of UPMC, police said.

A preliminary hearing for Stewart is scheduled for Oct. 10 before District Judge Douglas Weimer of North Huntingdon.
