Most government offices closed Friday for Veterans Day

Most federal, state, county and city offices — including courts — and many schools will be closed Friday in observance of Veterans Day, which falls on Saturday this year.

The U.S. Postal Service will deliver mail on its regular schedule Friday and instead observe Veterans Day on its regular day. Trash collection in the City of Pittsburgh will not be affected by the closings.

Streets along the Veterans Day parade route and its intersections will begin closing Saturday morning in advance of the event, which kicks off at 10:30 a.m.

The parade will form on Liberty Avenue between 10th and 26th streets and proceed to Commonwealth Place near the Point.

An event titled “Steel City Salutes the Troops,” which will feature displays of select military equipment, will be held in Point State Park following the parade.

Highlighting the salute will be a recognition by the City of Pittsburgh of local military units that have returned home from deployments during 2017.

The Flight 93 National Memorial and a Somerset County chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are planning a special Veterans Day exhibit at the site near Shanksville.

The DAR Forbes Road Chapter and the national memorial will co-host “Honoring Veterans Through Their Stories,” which will be open on three Saturdays — Nov. 11, 18 and 25 — from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the memorial's Learning Center.

The memorial is at 6424 Lincoln Highway, Stoystown. Admission is free.
