A Scottdale motorcyclist critically injured Wednesday in an East Huntington Township accident has died.
According to the Allegheny County Coroner's Office, Randy Thomas, 48, died at 5 a.m. Friday at UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh.
State police at Uniontown report that Thomas sustained critical injuries after a Saturn coupe, driven by Leonard Latsko of Mount Pleasant Township, swerved into the path of his Harley-Davidson Road King motorcycle at 10:41 a.m. Wednesday. Thomas was riding north on Route 819 in front of Arby's Restaurant and Latsko was driving south.
The motorcycle struck the front passenger side of the Latsko vehicle, and witnesses said the impact caused Thomas to be ejected from the motorcycle and thrown about 50 feet. He landed on a traffic island north of Arby's parking lot.
Police said Thomas was not wearing a helmet.
Rick Logan of Connellsville was traveling behind the Latsko vehicle.
"I couldn't see just what happened, but I heard the crash and then saw the biker in the air," Logan said. "I pulled my truck over and called 911 and then went over to help him."
Thomas was flown from the scene to UPMC Presbyterian.
Latsko was treated at Frick Hospital in Mount Pleasant for minor injuries and released.
Police report that charges are pending in the case.
Thomas was born in Mount Pleasant and was married to Colleen O. Grady Thomas for 16 years. They have two children, Joshua Cooper Thomas and Jeremiah Morgan Thomas.
He graduated from Southmoreland High School in 1974, served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict and worked as an electrical engineer.
