Mt. Pleasant junior/senior high students will spend more time in the classroom.

Principal Ken Williams informed school directors Monday that several adjustments were made to increase class time.

Williams said the lunch period was pared from 43 minutes to 30 minutes, and a new daily start time of 7:35 a.m. was implemented. The long-standing nine-period schedule was reduced to eight, with less time wasted changing classes.

"The kids are in classes more," Williams said. "There is not that big lapse in time. Now, when they are in school, they are engaged in instruction."

Williams also said the new system has cut down on hallway traffic and there are fewer disciplinary issues.

A new student store will open soon.

"One thing that I noticed when I came here is that the school spirit here is really, really high," Williams said.

The store will be open during the fifth period and will be manned by students of the rural entrepreneurship class.

"In addition to the knowledge that the students will gain from the running of the store, it will also be seen as a fundraising activity," Williams said. "All proceeds will be given back directly to the students and to student life."

In other business, the board hired Georgia Speer to fill a secretarial position.
