Mt. Pleasant Firemen's Fair starts Monday

Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Firemen's Fair is next week, so head over to have some fun, eat some great food and support our local heroes. The street fair will be held on Smithfield Street June 21-26, with a parade on June 22.

The fair will feature rides, festivities and nightly entertainment. Monday night will be one-price ride night for $10; Tuesday through Saturday rides will be $12 nightly. Discount pre-ride tickets for $10 will be available at Shop 'n Save, Diamond Pharmacy, Joe's Pools and Kraisinger's Market. Music entertainment will be held nightly starting at 8. There also will be a drawing held nightly at 11. The firemen's parade will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Stop over and have a good time.

Southmoreland and Mt. Pleasant school districts will hold a program that focuses on the Pennsylvania pension crisis and the future of property taxes. The event will be presented by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association and will be sponsored by both districts. The program will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Southmoreland High School auditorium.

Friday will be the first "Movies in the Park" event, in which a family movie will be shown in Veterans Park starting at dusk. Bring a blanket and enjoy the evening. In case of rain, the movie will be shown on Saturday.

Head over to the park Sunday for a Father's Day event. The evening will feature the second "Concert in the Park" with music by Back in Time. There also will be fire truck rides, games and an outside buffet. There is no admission fee. The buffet will be $6 per person. Stop over and have some fun with members of the community.

Mt. Pleasant Public Library's Summer Reading Program is ready to roll with this year's theme being "Make a Splash -- READ." Children will be invited to explore the world of water and water fun through stories, songs, games and other activities about all waterways, such as oceans, rivers, lakes and pools, and all the creatures that live there. The program is open to all young people, preschool through young adults, with programs, prizes, story hours, a craft club and more. To register or for information, call the library at 724-547-3850.

Starting at 6 tonight, the Mt. Pleasant library will hold a program to explore the wonders of ancient Egyptian sailing and fishing. A slide presentation will feature life and nature along the Red and Nile rivers. The presentation is suitable for adults and for children age 8 and older. The Relay for Life team Esther's Crew will be hold a bus trip to see a presentation titled "Joseph" at the Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster. The group trip will attend the matinee on July 31, to be followed by dinner at the Shady Maple smorgasbord. Cost for the show, dinner and transportation is $130 per person. The Regional Family YMCA will offer weekly fishing and hiking trips for ages 7 to 15. The fishing camp will visit local and state parks every Wednesday starting today through July 21. This camp is open to those who are interested in learning how to fish or those who already know how to fish. Participants are responsible for their own equipment and lunches. Parks and lakes visited will include Mammoth Park, Twin Lakes, Keystone State Park, Kooser State Park, Laurel Hill Park and Donegal Lake. Cost will be $60 for YMCA members and $80 for nonmembers. The genealogy library at the DAR House is now open to the public and welcomes all who want to research their backgrounds. The library will be open from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays and 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Wednesdays and be open through October.

Don't forget that your 2009 per capita taxes are due by June 30. Those paying should include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Mt. Pleasant free swim program will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. June 21-July 16. To sign up, call 724-423-5653. The program is open to all Mt. Pleasant residents.

Mt. Pleasant Church of God has begun divorce recovery seminars. Support groups will be held from 7-8 p.m. every Wednesday. Conducted by Pastor Ben Tobias, the sessions will feature video input of nationally recognized experts on divorce and recovery. Child care is provided with advance notice. Mt. Pleasant Township arts and crafts program will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays from June 21-July 15 in Acme, then from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays thorough Thursdays in Norvelt. Bring a lunch.

Curbside recycling is up and running. Items that can be recycled include glass, plastics, cans, newspapers, phone books, catalogs, magazines, junk mail, and cardboard that has been folded, bundled and tied, not taped. Remember, no pizza boxes. Next recycling dates are June 28 and 29.
