Sept. 11, 2001, is a day that always will live in the minds and hearts of all Americans.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our country.
Mt. Pleasant Borough will join communities across the country in hosting its own 9/11 tribute.
"It's not a celebration but a day that reminds us that it's important that we never forget what happened that day," said Mt. Pleasant Borough Council President Joe Bauer. "That is the second time that war was brought to U.S. land, and it was a tragic day. It was one that we must all remember."
The program will begin at 6 p.m. at the gazebo in Veterans Park.
"We're going to have a speaker that represents all areas of first response," said Mt. Pleasant Borough Manager Jeff Landy. "We'll have a speaker from an ambulance service, the fire department and the police department."
Landy said that the speakers from the first response units will be from local departments.
Landy said a keynote speaker will be named before the event.
The tribute has been held in the borough since the first anniversary of the incident. Bauer feels that the local ties to Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville in nearby Somerset County, adds to the good attendance of the programs.
"The 911 Center called the borough and said that the plane was coming down, and it was coming down in the borough," Bauer said. "Can you imagine what that would have been like⢠And there were guys from town here who were golfing out in Norvelt and stopped to watch the plane as it went over. I think people here in Mt. Pleasant feel a connection to that day, and that is part of the reason that they come to the tribute every year."
After the tribute, music appropriate for the event will be performed by The Traveling Road Band.
"They are opening with a patriot song, and they are finishing the show with patriot music," Landy said, adding that the 9/11 anniversary fell on the Sunday of the closing of the Concerts in the Park series, so the borough decided to incorporate the two events.
"The tribute has changed for us over the years, and this year will be even more different with the music," Landy said. "This is something that is important to us, and this is something that the people in Mt. Pleasant support."
