'Mullets': UPN has a bad hair day

It has finally happened. Television executives ran out of ideas and decided that a show based on a bad hairstyle could be a hit. Welcome "The Mullets," a crude offering that is too stupid to be insulting.

"The Mullets" features the Mullet brothers -- Dwayne and Denny Mullet. They sport the famous hairstyle that bears their name. With cropped locks in the front and straggly hair in the back, the brothers are proud of the message their locks convey.

"Business in the front, party in the back," they like to exclaim.

The brothers are co-owners of a contracting and roofing business. Which means, there will be plenty of opportunities for them to fall through roofs, get hit with hammers and trip into walls.

Dwayne (Michael Weaver) and Denny (David Hornsby) have a style that is their own. They prefer ripped jeans, sleeveless T-shirts and big boots.

They live in a dump and hang out with guys who also love the "party" hairstyle.

You can't blame the boys for loving the good things in life. They learned it all from Mom. Mandi Mullet-Heidecker is the type of mom who wears tight clothes, has big hair and loves to share love.

"You boys know you have the one thing I can never get enough of, Pabst Blue Ribbon," she coos.

Loni Anderson plays Mandi to her one-dimensional best. Mandi is a far cry from the Anderson's sophisticated Jennifer on the late-'70s comedy series "WKRP in Cincinnati." Anderson must be desperate for work.

John O'Hurley proves that "Seinfeld" success has not been kind to its alumni. But he must be the proudest member of "The Mullets" since his character actually has an IQ above 80. O'Hurley plays the pompous Roger Heidecker, game show host and Mandi's new love. Roger, an overblown clone of Alex Trebek, speaks authoritatively and knows a lot about nothing.

Of course most of the comedy comes when Roger is forced to spend time with the fun-loving brothers.

Their idea of a fun night is slugging beer and watching monster trucks on television. Their favorite pastime is hanging out at the local convenience store where they can munch nachos and gulp big drinks while humiliating themselves in front of the cute clerk.

"The Mullets" is as good as the hairstyle, which should have disappeared years ago.
