Explaining where they live just got a little easier for some Murrysville residents.
People who have an Export ZIP code but actually live in Murrysville can now use their municipality on mail. Mayor Bob Brooks announced Wednesday that those living in the Export 15632 ZIP code can receive mail with a Murrysville 15632 ZIP code.
"People who actually live in Murrysville can let those people outside know they live in Murrysville," Brooks said.
Murrysville residents can have one of seven ZIP codes, said Tom McGuire, addressing coordinator for the municipality. About 40 percent of residents have the Murrysville 15668 ZIP code, and an additional 40 percent live in the Export ZIP code. The remainder of the municipality is split between Delmont 15626, Monroeville 15146, Jeannette 15644, New Kensington 15068 and Plum/Pittsburgh 15239.
That causes unnecessary confusion, said John Cicco Jr., a 35-year resident of Murrysville. In 2003, he and his wife moved into a home in Murrysville with an Export ZIP code. Cicco said he can't count the number of letters, cards and assorted mail that never made it to his home because they were addressed "Murrysville" instead of "Export."
"It's an element of complexity," Cicco said. "This relieves an unnecessary confusion that we don't have to start sentences by saying that we physically live in Murrysville. ... Not being allowed to say you live in Murrysville was frustrating."
Rep. Jason Altmire (D-4th) received complaints from residents who lived in the Export ZIP code, said Tess Mullen, a spokeswoman for Altmire. The congressman worked with local Postal Service officials to have the request granted.
Brooks suggested residents begin changing their mailing information so that within a few months all mail will say Murrysville instead of Export.
"Change your return labels and make adjustments," Brooks said. "If you use the Murrysville name, over time the transition will work."
Mail sent to the Export 15632 address still will be delivered.
