The Nanoleaf Bloom bulb is amazingly bright at full power. I have finally found a bulb that will properly illuminate my dining room, where the kids do homework and crafts.
The dimming feature is simple to use, though it’s easier with some switches than with others. The bulb is made from metal panels with LEDs attached to each panel, so it’s not likely to break if dropped. It’s a pretty cute design and could work as a decorative bulb in fixtures where it is exposed.
The packaging says all the right things about energy consumption, and the company claims the bulbs will last for more than 27 years. I have only recently begun converting to LED bulbs because I like the crisp quality of the light, and I will certainly enjoy installing a few more of the Nanoleaf Blooms around the house. These dimming bulbs are $40, but there is a nondimming version available for $30.

Maybe it’s because none of the lamps or overhead lights in my house is all that new, but I couldn’t get the Nanoleaf Bloom Energy Efficient Light Bulb with Built-in Dimmer to function in a smooth increase or decrease of light like a hard-wired dimmer switch would.
But, because many energy-efficient bulbs aren’t compatable with old-style dimmer switches, even if Nanoleaf Bloom only functions like a “3-way” bulb, it might be worth considering for many people. One, its dodecahedron shape is attractive (it’s made from printed circuit board that’s encrusted with LED lights). Two, the quality of light is great for reading or crafting with no eye strain (the instruction sheet says it uses just 10 watts to produce 1,200 lumens, similar to an old-fashioned 75-watt bulb). And, three, it’s rated to last for about 27 years. That makes up for the high price tag of about $40 at the Nanoleaf website.
Also on the website, it’s available in black if that better suits your decor.

After receiving my last couple of electric bills, I thought it would be great to start saving money by switching over to LED fixtures and bulbs, and when this one came up for testing, I was all in! The Nanoleaf Bloom “bulb” offers a dimmable version without the use of a dimmer switch by simply coordinating the on/off switch. I don’t have any dimmers in my house, so I figured that this would be a nice addition to my lighting scheme.
The bulb itself is quite futuristic, as it is somewhat shaped like a bulb but the sides are flat like facets on a gemstone with three LEDs per facet. This bulb was rated for 10 to 75 watts, and I thought the brightness was great.
The dimming procedure, however, was rather tricky to master. The instructions seem simple enough: switch the light off/on to start dimming, and, once it gets to the level you want, turn the switch off/on again to lock it in. The quirky controls for that procedure convinced me that if I wanted a dimmable light fixture, I’d be better off going the conventional route versus this bulb.
I am also interested in seeing how well this bulb will last, as I’ve had other bulbs (CFL and LED) fail a lot quicker than touted. This particular unit is supposed to last for a tad over 27 years at 3 hours-a-day usage. There is a three-year limited warranty based on the operation of 6 hours usage per day, 7 days a week.
All in all, it’s an interesting item, but the price is too prohibitive for me.
