So Gov. Ed Rendell lost a Super Bowl bet with Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and had to sing the national anthem at a 'Sixers-Celtics game ( "Oh, say can't you sing?," Whispers, April 3).
"HAD TO" -- not "GOT TO." Not "WAS PRIVILEGED TO," but "HAD TO"!
Most of these political sports bets are silly and designed to somehow bolster civic pride and add something to the rivalry. This one was insulting. Bet a case of Iron City against a case of Sam Adams, or a dozen Philly cheesesteaks against a couple gallons of clam chowder. It would have been better for Romney to 'GET TO' sing it as the winner.
I have no idea what Rendell's voice is like, but I hope he pulled this off with dignity and respect.
