NBC Universal and Bank of America Thursday announced plans to turn New York's Rockefeller Center into Democracy Plaza later this month.

The public exhibit of historical artifacts -- including one of only 25 existing original copies of the Declaration of Independence -- will be free and open to the public. The exhibition is scheduled to open Oct. 20 and run through Nov. 5.

Visitors will also see photographs, video displays and other items illustrating U.S. citizenship, democracy and the electoral process. Children's book publisher Scholastic will sponsor an interactive educational workshop for children.

The Declaration of Independence and a multimedia exhibit are being provided by Declare Yourself, a nonpartisan, nonprofit campaign founded by TV producer Norman Lear.

Other items scheduled to be displayed include a Teddy Roosevelt "whistle-stop" era replica railroad car; examples of voting-booth technologies; a full-scale replica of the Oval Office; a full-scale replica of an Air Force One fuselage; and interactive exhibits promoting voter registration.
