Mike Bielen has always had an interest in politics, but his collegiate athletic career provided him with an opportunity to experience the joy of helping others.

Combined, these two interests have helped to prepare him for his new position as Donora borough administrator.

Bielen took over the post in September, assuming the role Bob Paraschak held for 25 years before retiring.

During his undergraduate days at St. Andrew's College in North Carolina, Bielen first experienced community involvement.

Bielen played baseball on the college team, which was known for working in the community. The players, among other things, operated youth baseball camps, held fund-raisers for local churches and oversaw Fun Night events for children.

The son of a former councilman, Bielen began his public service work while still in college.

Bielen received a bachelor of arts degree in history and politics from St. Andrew's, and a master's degree in public administration from Shippensburg University in December 2001. He served an internship with State Rep. David Argall in the summer between his sophomore and junior years at St. Andrew.

"That's when I got interested in government," Bielen said, "Just to be able to help the public."

In 2001, he worked first in the state governor's office and then in the auditor general's office.

Bielen is a native of McAdoo, a small town in Schuylkill County in eastern Pennsylvania.

His sister, Michelle Ponchione, lives in Peters Township, and saw an advertisement for the Donora position. Bielen said he was impressed when Donora officials called him for an interview.

"They showed an interest so I came out," Bielen said.

Donora was similar to his hometown. He has slowly been meeting Donora residents and attending community activities.

Despite his many roles, from working with council to making sure the community complies with state regulations, Bielen acknowledged he has adjusted.

Steven Morus, borough manager in Forest Hills, is providing some guidance for Bielen through the state Department of Community and Economic Development's Peer Assistance Program.

Bielen is living with his sister as he makes plans to move to Donora.

Bielen said he is impressed that council and the mayor have been able to hold the line on taxes for many years. He will help council to manage finances.

Donora Mayor John Lignelli said borough council made a good choice in Bielen.

"He's learning the job quite well," Lignelli said. "He knows what to do and how to do it. ... Give him time; he'll make a great borough administrator."
