New barber shop opens in Connellsville

Jess Schroyer isn't who you would expect to find running a barber shop, but he knows what he's doing. The 23-year-old Connellsville Area High School graduate finished at the top of his class from the Pittsburgh Beauty Academy Institute of Barbering Technology, and is now bringing his skills home. Schroyer's Barber Shop, Connellsville, was opened as a part-time venture in January, with Jess cutting hair from 5 to 9 p.m. each weekday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays after he already completed a full day's work. "He's doing pretty well here," Jess' father, Richard, said about the 139 Snyder St. location. Just outside of downtown, and at the foot of mountain-way Springfield Pike, the shop is convenient for residents of both altitudes. "I enjoy people," Jess said, "so this was a good occupation to take up." The young barber found out he was good at cutting hair while still in his teens. His mother, Charlene, said Jess cut his friends' and neighbors' hair in South Connellsville, but never accepted money until he opened his own shop. "It got to the point where he needs to do it full time," Richard said. Jess is happy to own his own business at such a young age, and is confident demand will meet supply. He hopes at some point to expand the business, and said he would add more barbers, tanning beds and maybe sell some products. "Right now, it's just a one-man operation, though," he added. Schroyer's Barber Shop is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon to 9 p.m. and Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. No appointment is necessary. The cost for a haircut is $8. Jess also offers beard trimming and neck shaving.
