Hunters and fishermen braving the cold will have a new product designed to keep their feet warm. Heatmax -- the company known for its HotHands hand warmers -- has developed "Toasti Toes" insoles foot warmer. To activate the insoles, you simply open the package and expose them to air. An adhesive on one side allows you to attach them to the bottom of your socks. They are odorless and ultra-thin and meant to provide up to nine hours of effective, comfortable warmth. The insoles are made with all natural ingredients to be safe and environmentally friendly. Once you've used them and they've lost their power, you just toss them out with your regular trash. Suggested retail price is $2.99. For information: write Heatmax, PO Box 1191, Dalton, GA 30722; call toll-free 1-800-432-8629.

Lure of the week

Lure: Popper shad

Company: Fishbelly Lures

Lure type: Soft plastic topwater

Sizes and colors: Available in 5- and 6-inch models in colors named marsh kilie, rainbow trout, alewife, ayu, silverside, and pearl blue minnow.

Target species: Largemouth, smallmouth and striped bass and walleyes.

Technique: These lures are meant to mimic a struggling baitfish and attract strikes from predators, so cast them out, let them sit, and then twitch them periodically.

Sugg. retail price: $7.49 per six.

Notable: As with any topwater lure, the slower you can fish it, the better this one works. Fish the Popper shad as slowly as you can around structure, pausing between twitches.

Tip of the week

If you catch a fish and want to know how big it is, but don't have a ruler handy, look to your wallet. A dollar bill -- which is 6 1/8 inches long and 2 5/8 inches wide -- can act as a serviceable substitute. A fish that measures the length of one bill and half of another, for example, would be slightly over nine inches. A fish as long as two bills would be just over 12. That's important to know if you plan to keep, say, a bass that has to be 12 to 15 inches long to be a keeper, depending on location.

Recipe of the week

Lemon-Butter Steelhead

Ingredients

• 2 Steelhead Fillets

• 1/8 tablespoon garlic powder

• 1/2 tablespoon lemon pepper

• 1/4 stick of butter

• 1/8 tablespoon salt

Directions

Microwave the butter until it's in liquid form, then add the garlic powder, lemon pepper and salt.

Turn your barbecue grill to medium and place a sheet of foil over the grate. Cut the steelhead fillets into quarters and remove the skin. When the grill is hot, brush the foil and the chunked fillets with the butter mixture. Continue brushing the fillets every few minutes until the fish is done, which should take about eight to 12 minutes, then serve.
