Construction on a half-mile stretch of New Salem Road in South Union Township, Fayette County, should start in late 2008 or early 2009.

The roadway will remain open through the approximate two years of construction.

Supervisor Thomas Frankhouser said the project has been expedited because of the Widewaters development on Matthew Drive and the Fayette Business Park.

The project will involve widening New Salem Road to five lanes. It will cost about $5 million, with 80 percent in federal and 20 percent in state funds.
