New SportsWorks set to open Dec. 19 at Carnegie Science Center

The Carnegie Science Center's popular Highmark SportsWorks exhibit will be opening on Dec. 19, after weather and construction permit delays moved the original date back three months.

The $5 million, 12,000-square-foot Highmark SportsWorks exhibit, which is dedicated to the science of sports, will be in a 20,000-square-foot building that stands adjacent to the main Science Center building on the North Side. The exhibit will contain nearly 30 interactive experiences, along with four classrooms.

"There is no bigger sports town than Pittsburgh," says Ann Metzger, the center's co-director, in a written statement released Thursday. "What Highmark SportsWorks does is take that passion for sports and deliver science and learning in a hands-on, high-energy atmosphere."

Highmark SportsWorks lets visitors participate in activities like rock-climbing, trampoline-jumping and baseball, while learning about the physics of sports, the human body, and nutrition and fitness.

Construction on the new facility started in the fall of 2008, after the old SportsWorks -- situated a block away from the center -- closed that summer to make way for a light-rail station as part of the Port Authority of Allegheny County's North Shore Connector project.

Admission to Highmark SportsWorks is included with the center's general admission of $14; $10 for ages 3 to 12 and 62 and older.
