The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is studying the intersection on Route 40 near the Chalk Hill Road (SR 2010) to address possible upgrades.

A public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 20, at the Wharton Township Building on Route 381 in Farmington, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The purpose of this meeting is to present an open forum for discussion of the project design. Representatives from PennDOT Engineering District 12-0 and GAI Consultants Inc. will discuss the project and receive input.

The construction is anticipated to start in the spring of 2003.

The building is accessible to persons with disabilities. Any person needing special aid is asked to contact the Department of Transportation prior to the meeting. For information concerning the meeting, contact Patrick B. Richter, P.E., project manager, at (724) 439-7237.

    Smithton

PennDOT District 12 advises motorists that on June 12 and 13, traffic patterns on Smithton High Level Bridge, which carries Interstate 70 across the Youghiogheny River in Westmoreland County, will be changing.

Motorists traveling in both directions will be shifted to the inside lanes and may see delays as barriers are removed and barrels put into place.

On June 12, this work will be done on the westbound lanes. On June 13, the eastbound lane will be worked on.

PennDOT asks motorists to drive carefully, give themselves enough distance between the vehicles in front of them and slow down. Posted speed limits are for optimum roadway conditions.

All field employees must show a county-issued photo identification badge to residents. Data collectors will ask to conduct an interior inspection; however, residents do not have to allow this if it is not convenient. Data collectors will not collect information on personal belongings or furnishings. Each field employee has passed a criminal background check and has submitted personal and vehicle information that is listed with local law enforcement, the county's Assessment Office and Cole-Layer-Trumble (CLT), the company conducting the project.
