The Fayette County Food Bank, Scottdale branch, services the Kingview, Everson and Bullskin Township areas. Sign-up for area residents meeting the income guidelines will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at Kingview Mennonite Church, Kingview Road. Bring proof of residence (a recent utility bill for example) and proof of income.

Holiday crashes

State police Commissioner Paul J. Evanko reported nine people were killed and 496 others injured in 1,121 crashes investigated by state police during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday driving period.

Evanko said four of those killed were not wearing seat belts, and two of the fatalities were alcohol-related. Of the total crashes, 85 were alcohol-related.

During the Thanksgiving driving period, which ran from Nov. 21 through 25, troopers issued 4,864 speeding citations, arrested 207 for driving under the influence, cited 187 for not wearing seat belts and issued 30 citations for failing to secure children in safety seats.

State police once again participated in Operation CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), a national program committed to traffic-crash reduction on interstate highways during holiday seasons.

Evanko said that during the 2000 Thanksgiving holiday driving period, 11 people died and 477 were injured in 1,267 crashes investigated by state police. Troopers issued 5,369 speeding citations and made 254 drunken driving arrests.

Flu immunizations

Fayette EMS will offer flu immunizations at its office on Arch Street in Connellsville from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 28 and Nov. 29 and from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 29 and Dec. 6.

The elderly and those with chronic illness run the greatest risk for complications from influenza. Vaccination is recommended for anyone who routinely works with the public. For more information, call 724-628-6810.

Flu shots

The Connellsville Senior Center will have flu shots available on Dec. 5. The cost will be $15 per shot. Security Blue and Medicare will also be accepted.

Buys Motordrome

James "Red" Miley has completed the purchase of Motordrome Speedway near Smithton.

Miley is well-known to western Pennsylvania racing fans. He is president of Miley Motorsports Inc., the promoter of Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway in Imperial, Allegheny County.

Motordrome Speedway, a half-mile asphalt track, will continue to operate as part of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series program. It will feature Late Models, Pro Trucks, Modifieds, Street Stocks and Chargers. The Pennsylvania Legacy Series is set to return to the track as well.

Miley's acquisition will complement his other track. Motordrome was converted from dirt to asphalt in 1990 and races are held Friday nights. Pittsburgh's Motor Speedway is a dirt surface that holds races Saturday nights.

Tim Callahan has been appointed marketing director of the NASCAR Motordrome Speedway in South Huntingdon Township and Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway in North Fayette Township.

Sharing venison

Fayette County Community Action Agency's Food Bank will receive venison donations from Pennsylvania's "Hunters Sharing the Harvest" program in the next few weeks. These donations will be distributed through the food bank.
