Herb Brown

Age: 66

Residence: Downtown

Family: Wife, Elaine; and three adult children

Occupation: Professor of marketing at Robert Morris University and director of the school's Massey Center for Business Innovation and Development, which has partnered with The Veterans Corp. to train U.S. military veterans to become business leaders.

Education: Undergraduate and post-graduate degrees from Southern Illinois University and Miami University of Ohio; doctorate from Ohio State University.

Background: Previously taught at Wright State University in Dayton and taught advanced business marketing courses at Rutgers University, Southern Illinois and in France and Chile.

Noteworthy: Brown's Massey Center is considered the nation's most successful training program for veterans dreaming of becoming entrepreneurs. The program offers two courses for business pioneers: a $250 11-week introductory course that helps vets come up with new business ventures and a $350 13-week course that teaches management, marketing, financial planning, e-commerce, navigating the maze of government contracts and other advanced skills.

Quote: "If you don't start your own business, you're really behind the eight ball. We're finding that in the current job market, people who are creating their own opportunities are far better off than those who don't. Jobs are not being created by many of our large corporations. They're coming from small and medium-sized businesses."
