Noteworthy: Received a Hartwell Biomedical Research Collaboration Award for 2011, which will provide money toward his goal of developing an artificial intestine. Hackam, in collaboration with John March, associate professor of biological and environmental engineering at Cornell University, will receive $543,571 over three years from The Hartwell Foundation, a Memphis-based organization that supports innovative biomedical research. They will use the funding to pursue their proposal for the generation of an artificial intestine for the treatment of short bowel syndrome in children as well as Crohn's disease and colitis in children and adults.
