Dr. Edward Kelly

Residence: Upper St. Clair

Family: Wife, Robyn; two daughters, Tierney, 31, and Bridget, 26; son, Brendan, 29

Age: 68

Occupation: Volunteer medical director for the Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center, Downtown

Education: Bachelor's degree in economics from Georgetown University and a medical degree from what is now the Medical College of Wisconsin

Background: Kelly ran a private practice as an orthopedic surgeon for more than 30 years before he retired in 2003. He oversaw the construction of the health care center, recruited its staff of volunteer medical professionals and worked with donors and other partners. It has served about 7,000 patients this year.

Noteworthy: Kelly won the John Heinz Award from among 52 nominees in the region. Given by United Way of Allegheny County, the award recognizes a volunteer whose efforts exemplify the late senator's support of local families. Along with the award, United Way gives a $10,000 grant to the agency that benefits from the recipient's service.

Quote: "We're trying to provide health care for those that ordinarily would go to the emergency room. Most of the medical problems that ultimately go to the emergency room that are not trauma-related are probably problems that have been brewing for several days. By the time the problem gets to the emergency room, the costs go up."
