Dr. Kurt Weiss
Noteworthy: Weiss received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish a laboratory program in sarcoma research. The $827,280 grant will allow him to study sarcoma, a cancer that arises in tissues such as bone and muscle.

Occupation: Orthopedic surgeon at UPMC and assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

Background: Weiss was diagnosed with sarcoma in his leg as a teenager. The cancer spread to other parts of his body, and his leg was eventually amputated. The experience led him to study medicine and to work with cancer patients.

Education: He earned a bachelor's degree in history and pre-medicine at the University of Notre Dame. He obtained his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Weiss completed a residency at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a fellowship at the University of Toronto.
