Background: Averch is a professor of urology and director of endourology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is also director of the UPMC Kidney Stone Center, whose members treat and manage long-term kidney stone disease. Before joining UPMC in 2000, he was assistant professor of urology and director of endourology at the Medical College of Virginia. Averch is board certified by the American Board of Urology.
Education: Averch earned a bachelor's in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Between 1989 and 1996, he completed surgical and urologic residencies at New York Medical College, and a fellowship in endourology at the Brady Urological Institute of Johns Hopkins Hospital.
