Occupation: Science teacher, Greater Latrobe Senor High School
Education: LeVan is a 1993 graduate of Greater Latrobe Senior High School and a 1997 graduate of Gannon University, where she earned her master's equivalency in education in 2006.
Background: LeVan began teaching biology, life science and anatomy and physiology classes at Greater Latrobe in 1999. She teaches in the same classroom where she took biology classes as a student.
Notable: LeVan will receive the American Heart Association Westmoreland County Division's Education Award for her work on heart disease and stroke education during a ceremony Thursday evening. Each year, LeVan's anatomy and physiology students participate in the Golden Hour program sponsored by Excela Health. Each of her students must teach five people about the signs and symptoms of heart attack or stroke and the importance of seeking treatment. The students must also design and produce a display to be placed in locations around the community. The projects are judged by teachers and community members, and two winners' projects advance to the Excela regional Golden Hour program competition for the chance to win one of two scholarships. This year, both winning students came from Greater Latrobe.
Quote: "I set the expectation for my students high, and they have been consistently delivering award-winning projects. I am fortunate to teach such talented and hardworking students, and am happy to see their efforts rewarded with scholarship money. It is due to the hard work and talent of my students that I am receiving this award. They deserve the recognition."
