Joseph B. Kadane
Noteworthy: Kadane, the incoming chairman of the American Statistical Association's Committee on Scientific Freedom and Human Rights, was asked to brief members of Congress on Dec. 6 about what he said is Argentina's suppression of truthful data about its economic situation. The South American country has fined and filed criminal charges against statisticians who publish economic data the government doesn't approve, Kadane said. Misrepresenting and hiding unfavorable economic data helped lead to Greece's economic collapse.
Age: 70

Occupation: Professor emeritus of statistics and social sciences at Carnegie Mellon University's Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Quote: “For years, the Greek government lied about its deficit numbers. Argentina is now taking a similar path. We have to stop this from happening and protect statisticians and organizations who are trying to report economic numbers accurately.”
