Noteworthy: Recipient of the Virginia Hodgkinson Research Prize from the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action for her book “Democracy in the Making: How Activist Groups Form.” Blee spent three years observing 60 activist groups emerging in Pittsburgh.

Occupation: Professor of sociology at the University of Pittsburgh and associate dean for graduate studies and research at Pitt's Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts.

Background: Blee has studied activist groups, particularly racist organizations, for 30 years and has published four books and edited three others on the subject. Before joining the Pitt faculty in 1996, she taught sociology at the University of Kentucky.

Education: Bachelor's degree in sociology from Indiana University and a master's and doctorate in sociology from the University of Wisconsin.
