Background: Rebeiz, who came to Pittsburgh from the University of Wisconsin in the fall, works to understand the evolution of traits, or when a gene’s function and expression mutate to create new characteristics in a species. His lab work is focusing on mutations in fruit flies in the hope that such work eventually can be applied to human genetics to understand mutations that lead to disease or deformity.

Noteworthy: Rebeiz was named a 2011 Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow, a distinction that comes with a two-year, $50,000 grant.
