Occupation: Hughes has been store director for four independently owned Giant Eagle supermarkets in the Pittsburgh region since 2002.

Education: Graduated from Central Catholic High School, Oakland, in 1968

Background: Hughes started working at Giant Eagle supermarkets as a bagger in high school in 1966. He has worked at corporate or franchised Giant Eagle stores since then, except for between 1984 and 1991.

Noteworthy: Received the Pittsburgh Association of Manufacturers Representatives' 2010 Merchandiser of the Year award at Nevillewood Country Club on Oct. 8. He was presented with the award by his son, Ryan, who is assistant manager of a Giant Eagle store in Butler.

Quote: "I've seen two completely different sides of this business. Most of the independent stores are family operated, and they have to watch every penny of expenses. But at corporate, watching every penny is not as important."
