TAKING A LEAVE
Detroit defenseman Chris Chelios said Thursday that he will be off the ice indefinitely while he helps employees of his sports bar cope with the stabbing deaths of two co-workers. Chelios spoke to one of the victims minutes before she was stabbed to death Tuesday by a recently fired employee who later confessed to killing her and a co-worker at the eatery, according to a police report.
ALL-STAR COACHES
Buffalo's Lindy Ruff and Anaheim's Randy Carlyle will coach the Eastern and Western Conference All-Star Teams, respectively, at the 2007 NHL All-Star Game on Wednesday, Jan. 24 in Dallas. The coaches are taken from the teams with the top points percentage in each conference through games of Friday, Jan. 5.
MEETINGS
Penguins owner Mario Lemieux emerged from a "very positive" meeting with Gov. Ed Rendell and local leaders Thursday night without hinting whether the team will stay or move to Kansas City. Hours after touring the under-construction Sprint Center in Kansas City, Lemieux returned to Pittsburgh for his first in-person meeting with government officials since a plan to fund a $290 million arena with casino money was rejected.
TOP SHARK
Patrick Marleau became San Jose's all-time leading scorer after collecting a goal and three assists in Thursday night's 9-4 win over Detroit. Marleau has 454 points in a career spent entirely with the Sharks, roaring past Owen Nolan's career record of 451 early in the third period with his second assist. Marleau is one goal shy of Nolan's franchise record of 206.
BAD BRUINS
Boston has been outscored 20-3 during its three game losing streak after Thursday night's 10-2 defeat to Toronto. The Bruins have also allowed 28 goals in the last five games.
POWERING UP
San Jose had a franchise-record six power-play goals in a 9-4 rout of Detroit on Thursday night, including five in the third period during a string of nine consecutive tallies for the Sharks. Both power-play totals were the most ever allowed in Detroit's lengthy hockey history.
IF AT FIRST
St. Louis has not given up a goal in the first period since Andy Murray became coach 12 games ago, including Thursday night's 2-0 win over Chicago. The streak matches the NHL record which was set in 1974 by the Los Angeles Kings. The Blues ended the Kings streak that season by scoring a first period goal in the 13th game.

Curtis Joseph made 29 saves in his second straight shutout and Phoenix beat Carolina, 2-0, on Thursday night. ... St. Louis' Manny Legace stopped all 28 shots he faces in a 2-0 win over Chicago.

Minnesota's eight-game home winning streak came to and with a 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday night. ... Washington ended its five-game losing streak by beating Montreal, 5-1.

Carolina defenseman Bret Hedican will have finger surgery Friday and could miss up to four weeks, and left winger Cory Stillman, who missed the first two months of the season after offseason shoulder surgery, missed the game against Phoenix on Thursday with an upper body injury. ... Buffalo defenseman Henrik Tallinder, barely back from a broken arm, is out again with a high right ankle sprain.
PASSED AWAY
Earl "Dutch" Reibel, the former Detroit Red Wings player who helped the team win consecutive Stanley Cups in the mid-1950s, has died. He was 76.
SPEAKING
