As I read the letter "America's expiration date looms" (July 13 and TribLIVE.com), I was reminded of Virginia O'Hanlon, the little girl who wrote to The Sun newspaper back in 1897. She was afraid, because of what some of her friends were saying, that there was no Santa Claus. Her fears were calmed by The Sun's now-famous response, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus."

Reassuring letter writer Ron Opatka may not be so easy, but his fear can be and is being answered by more and more people every day. Individually and in groups, Americans are rising against what has become an elite, arrogant, self-serving class of rulers who are more than happy to spend our money with little or no regard for the consequences. We had a revolution to get rid of these types and to put things into good order, and it seems we are in need of another.

The one thing we must do as individuals is to speak out at every chance we get, whether to friends, family, fellow workers or anyone just nearby. We must also join our voices with others. The one thing we cannot afford to do is to remain silent. There need not be an expiration date on America the beautiful.
