Micah Woods was working outside the Linden Street rowhouse he owns and lives in Friday afternoon when he said it started “raining bricks.”

At least a dozen rows of bricks came loose from the top center of the two-story, four-unit building which carries the odd-side addresses of 3 to 9 Linden St. They fell in two waves onto the front porch roof.

“I’m beside myself,” Woods said shortly after the incident, which emergency dispatches said was reported at 1:49 p.m.

No injuries were reported in the collapse, Hilltop Hose Company Fire Chief Jeff Balog said.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known.

Eight or nine residents in the building’s three occupied units were displaced, and the Red Cross was called to help them, Balog said. He said officials were working on letting them back in to get clothes, medicine and other necessities.

“I don’t want them to spend too much time in the building,” he said.

Balog said there was concern that more of the building would come down, especially because of the severe weather that was forecast for later in the day.

“Right now, I feel the building is not structurally safe to let anyone return,” Balog said.

Woods said he was in front of the building working on emptying the one vacant unit. He said he was breaking apart an armoire into a large trash container.

“All of a sudden it started raining bricks,” he said.

Woods said he has insurance on the building, which he has owned for about five years, but was being told it may not cover this kind of damage.

Lonny Pittman, 32, said he’s lived in the building for just a couple months, but his mother has been there for four years.

He said he was on his way home walking in an alley beside the building when the bricks came down.

“I saw the bricks come out from the top of the roof there,” he said. Pittman said he was worried about her because she’s on disability and has no relatives to stay with.

“It’s devastating,” he said. “Hopefully, the Red Cross can help us.”
