No taxes, no vote

I'm not sure why an individual who doesn't pay taxes has the right to vote. I know that sounds "elitist" -- perhaps because our society has become so apathetic. I highly doubt many even consider what it means to be American outside of Election Day. That said, it's a shame that the vote has become more important than the voter.

It may sound discriminatory, but how can people understand the implications of who they elect if they don't even participate in paying taxes• Those who pay taxes are inclined to find out what they are paying for, making them more engaged with their government. It bewilders me how our society has marginalized individual accountability.

In the attempt to make everyone "equal" and everything "fair," we have lost sight of the reality that without holding everyone equally responsible for our country's well-being, we have adopted the mentality that some should be more financially responsible than others. In other words, those who pay taxes should pay more so those who don't can continue to collect government assistance.
