Construction on the North Shore Connector will disrupt bus stops and detour routes Downtown starting next week, Port Authority officials said.

On Tuesday, most of the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Stanwix Street will close so contractors can work on a tunnel connecting the T to a new station at Gateway Center and a 1.2-mile extension to the North Shore. Because many buses use that intersection, Port Authority is warning riders that many routes and stops will change until the intersection reopens, said spokesman Jim Ritchie.

"It's not every route but any route that relies on that intersection and that bottom part of Liberty," Ritchie said. The consistently packed stop at the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Market Street will close completely, and other stops will get service from fewer routes because of detours.

Temporary stops will be set up along detour routes, and signs will be posted to direct riders the few blocks they may have to walk. The changes may last about a year.

A complete list of detours and stop changes will be posted at www.portauthority.org. Officials will be posted at the affected stops later this week and early next week to explain the changes, and information will be available through the authority's customer service line at 412-442-2000.
