A federal judge today sentenced a Marshall-Shadeland man to 20 years in prison for crimes he committed as part of the Brighton Place/Northview Heights Crips gang.
Bryant Mathis, 23, pleaded guilty in January to a racketeering charge. He is one of the 26 people arrested and charged in February 2010 sweep by Pittsburgh police and federal agents aimed at dismantling what officials characterized as one of the most violent street gangs in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
The 37-count indictment charged the suspects with crimes ranging from drug dealing and robbery to attempted murder, but the charges filed against Mathis consisted of racketeering, possessing a firearm to commit violent crimes and obstruction of justice. The gun and obstruction charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
