North Versailles has extended its garbage contract with Big's Sanitation through 2015.
Commissioners unanimously approved the contract's fifth and final option year at their meeting Thursday.
The monthly cost per unit will increase from $8.54 to $8.80.
Board president George Thompson said Big's is cheap and always responds to service questions or complaints.
“When I call Big's, they get back out there,” Thompson said.
Commissioners approved, 6-1, disbursing $1,349 in fire tax funds to Crestas Terrace and $2,125 to West Wilmerding volunteer fire departments.
Commissioner George Beswick dissented.
Commissioners unanimously approved:
• Accepting a $6,000 bid from S&S Transit Inc. to purchase three 2008 Ford Crown Victorias.
• Selling an old light bar from an emergency vehicle to East Pittsburgh for $100.
• Purchasing two computers from Norman Alan for $1,347 for the police detective's office.
• Ratifying an Oct. 8 phone vote to purchase a commercial refrigerator for the community center for $3,265.
• Purchasing a carpet runner for the community center for $700.
• Appointing Jennifer Barner to the North Versailles Public Library board for a term to expire Dec. 31, 2016.
Thompson commended township code enforcement officer Allen Wagner for addressing code violations and getting residents to clean up the town.
“Yards are looking better. People are cutting their grass. It's looking good,” Thompson said.
Commissioners learned about land banks from Turtle Creek Valley Council of Governments executive director Amanda Settelmaier and special projects coordinator Elizabeth Kozub.
They presented township officials with a packet of information about Tri-COG Collaborative's land bank business plan. The collaborative includes Twin Rivers and Steel Valley councils of governments.
A land bank is a public authority that acts as a legal and financial mechanism to transform vacant, abandoned or tax-foreclosed properties to productive use.
Officials say that can help spur redevelopment in communities with little available land and neighborhoods that have lost residents and businesses.
Thompson said commissioners will review the packet and decide if a land bank could help the township.
