Matthew Schaffer

  • School: He is a senior at Hampton High School.

  • Notable: Schaffer attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. The conference is a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. The theme of the conference was "The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today." During the six-day program, Matthew interacted with leaders from the three branches of government, the media and the diplomatic corps.

  • Activities: At his school, he is the captain of the soccer team; he played the role of Billy in the school's musical, "Anything Goes"; he plays the trombone in the school band; he is treasurer of Tri-M, a music honors society; he is senior class treasurer; he is a member of National Honor Society; and he is the Spanish Club president. He also plays the piano and the flute.

  • Quote: "I definitely enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people my age. One of the biggest things we did was debating a bill on gun safety. It was neat because it was kids and members of Congress."
