A new survey says a majority of Norwegians want a referendum on the separation of church and state.
Aftenposten reports the church's own Bakkevig Commission recommended the state and church go their separate ways in 2002. Leaks from the new governmental Gjonnes Commission indicate the state is also leaning towards separation, the newspaper Dagsavisen reports.
Separating the church and state would require changes to the Norwegian Constitution.
A Vivendi survey for Dagsavisen posed the question of separation to Norwegians in the street.
Fifty-seven percent said the issue should be settled through a national referendum. Fifty-four percent favored separation, while 31 percent opposed and 15 percent were undecided, Aftenposten said.
