As is usually the case during the Players Championship, the 18th hole, a bear of a 447-yard par 4, ranked as the toughest hole on the course. It averaged 4.344 strokes this week. The unusual ranking was that the par 3 17th was the third-hardest, averaging 3.214. Amazing what a difference the wind makes.
There were no bogey-free rounds during the third or fourth rounds Monday. Twelve were recorded during the first two rounds.
Pace of play was a bit slow Monday. As the players finished their third rounds in the morning, it took them over five hours to play 14 holes. It was over six hours to play the final round.
Somebody asked Tiger Woods , who finished tied for 53rd, what he would take from the long week in Northeast Florida: "I'm going to forget about it as quickly as possible."
Former 84 Lumber Classic champion J.L. Lewis came up with a big week when he needed it. Lewis has struggled for a while since winning at Mystic Rock and was 65th on the money list going into the Players Championship. He finished 5-under-par, shooting 4-under over two rounds Monday and made $224,000, jumping to 43rd on the list.
