Notebook: Bone scan negative for Lowell

JUPITER, Fla. -- Florida Marlins third baseman Mike Lowell had a bone scan Thursday that indicated soreness in his throwing elbow was caused by inflammation. The scan ruled out a stress fracture. Earlier tests revealed swelling but no structural damage to the joint, which began bothering Lowell last August. Lowell plans to rest for several more days, skipping the team's trip this weekend to Mexico City, and then resume throwing Tuesday. The Marlins' medical staff doesn't believe the ailment is serious, and Lowell hopes they're right. "I don't want to go six months with this," the All-Star third baseman said. "No one sounds concerned, but I'm a little bit somewhat concerned, obviously, just because I feel it." The pain in Lowell's elbow subsided during the offseason but resurfaced soon after he began spring training workouts. Bonds' back doing better Barry Bonds, sidelined by back pain, took treatment and exercised yesterday but did not take batting practice. The San Francisco Giants outfielder wouldn't talk about the condition of his back, which began to bother him Wednesday. "Ask the trainer, that's what he's for," Bonds said. "There's a baseball game going on -- don't worry about me. I'm 40 years old." Bonds will likely miss at least one more day but could return to the lineup Saturday. Giants trainer Stan Conte described Bonds condition as inflammation and irritation of the joint at the base of his spine. A's trade Flores to Dodgers The Oakland Athletics traded infielder Jose Flores to the Los Angeles Dodgers for cash. Flores, a non-roster player, appeared in seven games with the A's as a second baseman and shortstop in September 2002. He was 0 for 3 with a walk, a hit by pitch and stolen base. Flores was a 34th-round pick in the 1994 amateur draft. Tejada injured, leaves spring training game Baltimore Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada left yesterday's game against Boston with what appeared to be a right leg injury. Tejada, who has the longest active consecutive games played streak in the major leagues at 594, was hurt when Mark Bellhorn hit a chopper between third and shortstop for the first out of the fourth inning. Dodgers pitching prospect faces arthroscopic surgery Los Angeles left-hander Greg Miller will have arthroscopic surgery next week to determine what is bothering his throwing shoulder. The procedure virtually guarantees that Miller, a top prospect, will open the season on the disabled list. Miller, 19, hasn't appeared in any exhibition games or thrown any bullpen sessions this spring because of a shoulder injury. He had been rehabilitating the shoulder for two months in Los Angeles before coming to Dodgertown.
