Notebook: Hasek won't return before next week

The Associated Press

DETROIT -- Dominik Hasek's groin injury will keep him out of the nets for the Detroit Red Wings until at least next week.

Hasek sat out his fifth straight game Wednesday night when the Red Wings played the Edmonton Oilers. He also missed five games earlier this season because of the injury.

"I do not want to happen what happened two or three weeks ago," Hasek said. "This time I want to heal completely so I will be good for the rest of the season."

PALFFY GOES ON IR

Los Angeles Kings leading scorer Ziggy Palffy, hurt when a puck struck him in the face, was placed on the injured list Wednesday.

Palffy is fifth in the NHL with 26 points, and is tied for the league lead with 20 assists. He is tied for the lead in power-play assists with 13, and tied for second with 15 points on the power play.

The Kings recalled Steve Kelly from Manchester of the AHL.

Palffy, 31, lost two teeth and had soft-tissue damage inside his right cheek when a clearing shot by teammate Ian Laperriere hit him while he was on the bench during the third period of Saturday's 2-0 win at Colorado.

Palffy did not play in a 4-0 loss to New Jersey on Tuesday night.

He joins teammates Jozef Stumpel (chest), Derek Armstrong (fractured finger), Brad Norton (forearm) and Jared Aulin (dislocated shoulder) on the injured list. Jason Allison and Adam Deadmarsh remain on the non-roster list.

Kelly was second in scoring for Manchester with five points and 14 assists. He has 21 career points in 143 NHL regular-season games.

BATTAGLIA PLACED ON INJURED LIST

The Washington Capitals placed forward Bates Battaglia on injured reserve before they played the Buffalo Sabres.

Battaglia hurt his foot in Washington's overtime loss to Florida on Saturday and missed the Capitals' victory Monday against Detroit.

In 18 games this season, Battaglia has just one assist. He was acquired from Colorado on Oct. 22 in the trade that sent Steve Konowalchuk to the Avalanche.

The Capitals also activated left wing Matt Pettinger, who missed the last 11 games due to a concussion.

Pettinger has two goals in 10 games for Washington.

PREDATORS SIGN DEFENSEMAN NECKAR

Defenseman Stan Neckar signed with the Nashville Predators and will begin practicing immediately.

The defenseman has 52 points and 316 penalty minutes in 509 career NHL games over nine seasons with Ottawa, the New York Rangers, Phoenix and Tampa Bay.

He appeared in 70 games with the Lightning last season, with one goal and four assists.
