As expected, freshman Rashad Jennings was named the starting tailback. The backups are sophomore Brandon Mason and freshman LaRod Stephens.

“We’re going to have to play two or three running backs,” coach Dave Wanstedt said. “They all know their roles.”

  • Linebacker Clint Session and defensive tackle Thomas Smith are doing well in their recoveries from minor knee surgeries. Wannstedt said one, or perhaps even both, could play Saturday.

  • Saturday’s game will be an important opportunity for Wannsedt to showcase his program to recruits. Among the eight high school players who will be making official visits to Pitt this weekend is Woodland Hills running back/cornerback Darrin Walls .

  • All of Pitt’s games this season will be broadcast on Sirius Satellite Radio. The Notre Dame game will be carried on channel 141.

  • The game will be broadcast by ABC to 72 percent of the country. The rest of the nation will get Texas A&M at Clemson.

  • Three former walk-ons — defensive tackle Ron Idoko , starting center Joe Villani and fullback Kellen Campbell — have been awarded scholarships.

“It’s fantastic, to be able to reward these guys,” Wannstedt said.

  • The Notre Dame game is officially sold out. However, some standing-room tickets are available. These tickets can be purchased only at Ticketmaster outlets, starting today.

  • Chris McKillop , who is still bothered by a hyperextended elbow, is listed second on the depth chart at defensive end. Charles Sallet will start at right end.
