Notebook: MLB hands out suspensions for brawl
Major League Baseball suspended three players and Philadelphia Phillies manager Larry Bowa for their roles in a bench-clearing brawl last week.
Phillies pitcher Carlos Silva was suspended for six games, Reds teammates Sean Casey and Adam Dunn received three-game suspensions and Bowa got a one-game ban for their actions last Friday at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.
All three players and Bowa also were fined undisclosed amounts, baseball said. Two other players -- pitcher Jose Mesa and catcher Todd Pratt of the Phillies -- were just fined.
All the players have the right to appeal. If they do, they can continue playing until their cases are resolved.
After Dunn and Phillies catcher Mike Lieberthal were involved in a home-plate collision in the fifth inning, Dunn came to bat in the sixth and had to dodge a low pitch from Silva. Umpire Doug Eddings issued a warning to both teams, but Silva's next pitch went behind Dunn and the batter charged toward the mound before getting tackled by Lieberthal.
Silva then threw an errant punch at Dunn, both benches emptied and Casey got into an altercation with Mesa.
CUBS ACQUIRE HERNANDEZ FROM ROCKIES
The Chicago Cubs acquired All-Star infielder Jose Hernandez from the Colorado Rockies for infielder Mark Bellhorn and minor-league pitcher Travis Anderson.
Hernandez, who signed with Colorado as a free agent in December, is hitting .237 with eight home runs and 27 RBI this season. He previously played with the Cubs from 1994-99.
Hernandez hit a career-best .288 for Milwaukee last season with 24 homers and 73 RBI and was selected to the All-Star Game for the first time. He also struck out 188 times, one short of Bobby Bonds's single-season record.
The 33-year-old Hernandez also has played with Texas, Cleveland and Atlanta since 1991. He has a .254 career average with 141 homers and 494 RBI.
Bellhorn, 28, hit .209 with two home runs and 22 RBI for the Cubs this season. He batted .258 with 27 homers and 56 RBI last year -- all career highs -- and set a Cubs record for home runs by a switch-hitter.
Bellhorn, who spent his first four seasons in the major leagues with Oakland, has a .229 career average with 36 homers and 102 RBI since 1997.
Anderson, 25, was 2-0 with two saves and a 0.00 ERA at Class A Daytona and 2-3 with a 4.37 ERA at Class AA West Tenn.
