Notebook: Plum's McAfee nation's No.1 kicker
Scout.com lists Plum's Pat McAfee as the nation's No. 1 kicker, an honor bestowed following his head-turning performance at a national competition last weekend in Miami, Fla. But the national ranking wasn't the only good to come out of the competition for McAfee. West Virginia scouts were watching closely when he put on a show, booting a 65-yard field goal to seal victory in the senior division of the One-On-One National Kicking and Punting Expo at the Orange Bowl. When McAfee got home, West Virginia called and offered him a scholarship.
"You never know who's watching," said McAfee, who will sign with the Mountaineers today. McAfee, 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, had given a verbal commitment to Kent State, but changed his mind after West Virginia suddenly entered the equation. "It's nothing against Kent State," McAfee said, "it's just that WVU has a chance at BCS bowls and bigger things like that. WVU has a lot to offer me and I have a lot to offer them."
