The Boston Red Sox activated catcher Jason Varitek, outfielder Trot Nixon and shortstop Alex Gonzalez from the disabled list Sunday, bringing back three regulars who were sidelined while the team's playoff chances plummeted. Varitek, the team captain, had been on the 15-day disabled list since Aug. 1 with torn cartilage in his left knee. Nixon was out since July 31 with a strained right biceps, while Gonzalez was gone since Aug. 22 with a strained side muscle. Carlos Beltran says his bruised left knee fees "a lot better" the morning after he crashed into the fence in left-center field at Minute Maid Park making a leaping catch. The three-time All-Star, who has 39 home runs and 112 RBIs for the Mets this year, was out of yesterday's lineup, but Mets manager Willie Randolph expected Beltran to return as early as today. Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones was a late scratch from the starting lineup in yesterday's game against Philadelphia with a sore oblique muscle on his left side. Cubs catcher Michael Barrett could miss the rest of the season after he was hit in the groin with a foul tip and underwent surgery. He will miss at least two to three weeks and was scheduled to be released from Northwestern Memorial Hospital yesterday, trainer Mark O'Neal said.
Digits 9 - Number of players to hit three home runs in a game this season. 51 - number of home runs hit by the Pirates' Ralph Kiner in 1947. It was the record for a second-year player until Ryan Howard hit his 52 yesterday. Additional Information:
