The Boston Red Sox on Tuesday announced a partnership with the Massachusetts Lottery for a World Series Trophy Tour. The lottery will spend $225,000 of its $10 million advertising budget to sponsor the tour, which team president Larry Lucchino said would stop in any of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts that requests a visit. The trophy has already traveled more than 20,000 miles and been shown in 10 different states and in the Dominican Republic.
Free agent infielder Ramon Martinez agreed yesterday to a one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers. Martinez hit .246 with three homers and 30 RBIs in 102 games for the Chicago Cubs last season, playing 73 games at shortstop, 24 at third base and six at second base. With the Tigers, he is expected to provide depth behind shortstop Carlos Guillen , third baseman Brandon Inge and second baseman Omar Infante .
Orioles pitcher Sidney Ponson was released from jail yesterday after being held for a week while police investigated allegations he punched a judge on a beach in Aruba. Ponson appeared before a judge, and prosecutors said they would not oppose his release as he awaits trial, the daily La Prensa reported. The 28-year-old right-hander faces charges of public violence and simple aggression. No trial date has been set.
The lawyer for a disgruntled sports fan accused of sending thousands of angry e-mail messages that appeared to be from Philadelphia sportswriters acknowledged that his client is "maybe psychologically fanatical" about the Philadelphia Phillies. But Mark T. Wilson , the lawyer for Allan E. Carlson , 41, of Glendale, Calif., said he doubted the prosecutor could prove that his client caused more than $5,000 in damage, the threshold for a federal crime.
