The Carrier Dome has yet to sellout this season because of fan apathy -- but it can still get lively. Connecticut found that out last week when crowd noise contributed to five false-start penalties. "It's still one of the toughest places in the country to play," UConn coach Randy Edsall said. "That place is a big advantage for them." Pitt won at the Dome two years ago, but is 1-8-1 since 1984. "It's our house," strong safety Diamond Ferri said. "We don't expect to lose here."
The largest crowd to see a game this season in the 49,000-seat Dome was 40,439 for national power Florida State.
Pitt (5-2, 3-1 Big East) and Syracuse (4-4, 2-1) have found the national spotlight for dubious reasons. They were ranked among eight schools listed that will be looking for a new head coach next season. The Panthers were ranked third and Syracuse fourth. Pitt coach Walt Harris is 49-42 and has been to four consecutive bowl games. Syracuse's Paul Pasqualoni is 105-57 with eight bowl bids in 14 seasons, but is 14-18 since 2001.
Pitt has allowed three blocked punts in the past two games, which does not bode well against Syracuse. The Orange have blocked six kicks this season. Anthony Smith has been the most dangerous of the Orange "blockers," as he's rejected three punts. The Orange have also blocked two field goals and an extra point.
Syracuse ranks 52nd nationally in rushing (163.9 per game), 103rd in passing (156.9) and 91st in scoring (21 points per game). Pitt is 23rd in stopping the run (109.4) and 109th against the pass (270.1).
