Rookie forward Chris Taft suffered a strained lower back during the Golden State Warriors' summer league game Monday night, an 88-79 loss to the Washington Wizards in Las Vegas. Taft, a second-round NBA draft selection after bypassing his final two years at Pitt, was injured on a dunk in the third quarter. He contributed nine points and five rebounds in 15 minutes before exiting. His status for the Warriors' remaining two Reebok Vegas Summer League games was uncertain.
Penn State junior Amanda Brown was selected to the Canadian Women's Basketball Senior National Team training squad. The Quebec native is one of 15 players named to the team, which reduce its final roster to 12 for the FIBA World Championships Qualification Tournament in September. Brown, a 6-foot-4 forward, was a starter in 28 of 30 games last season for Penn State. She averaged 7.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
Former Grove City College soccer players Jim Pontier (1968) and Philip Ahlschlager (1975) will be inducted into the schools Men's Soccer Hall of Fame as part of a homecoming weekend on Oct. 1. Pontier, a retired U.S. Air Force pilot, helped Grove City to a four-year record of 30-5-2. Ahlschlager, a former captain of the Wolverines who is vice president and general manager of Cox Communications, was named the team's MVP during his junior season and was invited to a tryout for the 1975 Pan American Games and the 1976 Olympic Games.
Gannon University named Kyle Witt as its new water polo coach. Witt, who previously served as a men's assistant at Whittier (Calif.), succeeds Don Sherman, who resigned to become associate athletic director at Gannon. Whittier was ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III last season and won the championship of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
