Upper St. Clair senior Shayna Miller will play tennis at Cornell next year. Miller chose Cornell over Connecticut and Boston. Miller has been one of the top players in the state. She's competed in four consecutive PIAA tennis tournaments in both singles and doubles. Miller lost in the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class AAA singles championships Friday at Hershey Racquet Club. Lindsay Gray of District 11 Liberty defeated Miller, 6-2, 6-7 (1), 6-4. "It was a great match," Miller said. "I lost a little bit of focus in the second set but she played so well. This was fun match and a not a bad way to end my high school career."

  • North Allegheny girls tennis coach Jim Sloan will coach his final two matches today.

Sloan, 59, decided to retire from coaching after 31 seasons with the Tigers. He retired from 37 years teaching Word Cultures for the North Allegheny School District last year. His overall match record is 427-77."Every season has been special," Sloan said Friday at the Hershey Racquet Club as he watched Christie D'Achille and Sabrina Smyers compete in the PIAA Class AAA doubles tournament. "They have put up with me, and I have put up with them, and I have enjoyed every minute of it."Sloan plans to fish, play golf and of course, tennis."We will miss him," said Smyers, who will play two matches today with D'Achille. "He is a great coach."

  • The PIAA boys' singles and doubles championships will be held at Hershey Racquet Club in May. Penn State's Sarni Tennis Center was the former site of the boys' tournament. The Hershey Racquet Club bid for the boys' championships after resurfacing its eight courts which were glass like and not easy to play on.
