Notebook: Wood leaves game with stiff shoulder

A stiff shoulder forced Chicago Cubs starter Kerry Wood out after the third inning of a game against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. Wood gave up three solo homers and four hits overall, throwing 66 pitches before he was replaced.

  • A company that says it owns the trademark rights to the name Washington Nationals baseball club answered a lawsuit brought by Major League Baseball with countercharges of its own yesterday. Bygone Sports LLC said it filed papers in U.S. District Court in Manhattan challenging claims brought last month by Major League Baseball Properties Inc. and Baseball Expos L.P.

  • Kenny Rogers' appeal of his 20-game suspension for shoving two TV cameramen last month is scheduled to be heard Friday, a day after the Texas Rangers pitcher makes his next start.

  • Infielder Wil Cordero was designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals, who also claimed outfielder Kenny Kelly off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.

  • St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Larry Walker responded to treatment for a stiff neck and was inserted into last night's lineup against the Milwaukee Brewers.

  • Outfielder Austin Kearns was called up from Triple-A Louisville, and utility player Ryan Freel was activated off the disabled list, bringing the Cincinnati Reds back to full strength.

  • The Boston Red Sox activated infielder Tony Graffanino and optioned third baseman Kevin Youkilis to Triple-A Pawtucket.
